What mobility scooters and power wheelchairs cost
Three tiers, and the ongoing costs are where buyers get surprised.
Travel scooters: $800 to $2,000
Built to come apart or fold for a car. Three or four wheels, 250 to 300 lb capacity, 8 to 15 miles per charge. The price difference within the tier is mostly weight of the heaviest piece, lithium versus lead-acid batteries, and suspension.
Full-size scooters: $1,500 to $4,000
Larger wheels, 15 to 30 miles of range, 350 to 500 lb capacity, better on grass and gravel. Rarely lifted into a car; some fit a vehicle lift.
Power wheelchairs: $1,500 to $5,000 and up
Joystick steering, tight turning radius, seating options. Prices climb with seating, drive type, and outdoor capability.
Ongoing costs
Batteries last one to three years and cost $100 to $300 to replace. Tires, chargers, and seat covers wear. Extended warranties and in-home service plans are sold separately by most retailers. Delivery is often free to the curb; in-home delivery and assembly cost more.
Paying for it
Most sellers offer financing. Some equipment is covered by insurance when a doctor documents medical need; that depends on your plan and is a conversation to have with them before you shop.
